ALICE SPRINGS
Red Centre Australia

Mairead
O'Halloran from Lillis Travel, Kilrush, recounts
her recent visit to Australia, where she gained
experience that helped her to qualify as an
Aussie Specialist.
"Alice Springs is a perfect base to explore authentic
Australia right in the centre of this huge country. I
went on a 2day
Uluru Safari from Alice Springs, which
was an amazing experience. The tour involved a bus
transfer shared by a small group (11 of us in total)
plus our tour guide.
We travelled into the outback for two days taking in
Kings Canyon, a night camping out in a swag (1 of the
highlights of my trip), walking the base of Ayers Rock
at sunrise & a trip to the
Olgas.
In Alice Springs there is plenty to see and do.
The
MacDonnell Ranges spread from East to West of the
town and are well worth a visit.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service
Visitors' Centre is well worth a visit and the
modest entry fee contributes to 'Help the Flying
Doctor Keep Flying'
The School of the Air in Alice Springs contains the
world's largest classroom and provides resources for
children living in remote areas of CentralAustralis.
Also in Alice Springs we got to hear the
Digeridoo
& Experience the
Aboriginal lifestyle.
The weather in Alice Springs was
hot in September.
Because of the desert-like landscape the climate is very
good in Alice Springs. However, being Irish
we had to be very careful as it hit 40º
for some of our time in Alice.
I really enjoyed this part of my visit to Australia as
it was so different to anywhere I have ever seen and so
unique to Australia.
From Alice Springs we travelled to
Cairns to Travel
along the East Coast of
Queensland
to
Sydney,
New South
Wales.
As my time in Oz was limited I chose to add in Internal
Flights wherever possible to travel from point to point, as
the distances in Australia are quite vast. If I
was going back again I would include the time to go on 'The
Ghan', the train service from Alice Springs up north
to Darwin. Other travellers have told me it
is an experience not to be missed. "
