FLORENCE
Florence is a feast for the artistic and historical
senses.
A day is insufficient for the Uffizi Gallery, a day is not enough for the Accademia Gallery, and ages
can be spent wandering through the Palatine Gallery, the
last residence of the Medici family and also an Hapsburg
Royal Residence.
It is possible to book tickets for the Museums online,
but the link can be temperamental.
Brian says:
"When I was in Florence in 2007 there was a green
half-door open in the facade of the church of Orsan-Michele
half way up to the left of Via dei Cazaliouli going
north from Palazzo Vecchio to the Duomo. The
notice at the side was in Italian only and it was
possible to book the time of your visit to any of the
Official Museums for the entrance fee plus €3 (Fee only
for EU citizens over 65 with Passport ID).
As this Official service is not mentioned in any guide
or online it appears that like the special fares for
locals on the vaporetti in Venice, this facility is
quietly available for the benefit of Italians.
One of the Museums that interested me most was the
Museo dell Opera Dell
Duomo.
This is
located directly to the rear of the eastern aspect of
the Duomo. It is worth the visit for three
items alone: the second of Michelangelo's
Pietas; Donatello's wooden Mary
Magdalene, which looks like a piece of modern art
and the choir balconies in the
Room of the Cantorias which feature sculpted cherubs
transported with the joys of music."
