 VERONA.

Brian ComerfordVerona is a city that combines history, culture, entertainment and style.

The best time to visit is during the opera season.   The 2009  Season commences on Friday 19th June with Carmen and ends on Sunday 30th August with Aida.   In between are performances of Turandot, The Barber of Seville, Gala Domingo, and  Tosca.

Anyone interested in the
operas should plan a visit so that the last opera in the visitor's timetable is AIDA.   This worked for me in 2005, when I attended three productions.   The audience reaction spoke volumes.   LA GIOCONDA, a new production, was listened to politely.   NABUCCO was acclaimed warmly, but Franco Zeffirelli's production of AIDA, was  wildly applauded.

AIDA is now an embedded part of Italian culture.   The staging is a riotous matrix of reds and golds.   The entire vast stage is used.   The triumphal chorus is just that. A triumph.   Trumpets blast from the entire semi-circle of the amphitheatre and frame the music of the chorus and orchestra.

Ticket prices for 2009 range from €18.00 to €218.   For €18.00 you get a stone seat
gradinata.   Rent a cushion (I rented two at a time!).   They cost from €3up ...proceeds to The Green Cross. Bring a small battery-operated fan as it can be very humid.   However, in the Settore Gradinata you get the best atmosphere, the best music value in Europe, the best acoustics and share that with up to 22,000 others in the Verona Arena

For that special romantic break a visit to Juliet's balcony is a must.   You have to suspend judgment, however,  given that Romeo and Juliet were characters built in William Shakespeare's imagination.  Verona is also an ideal honeymoon destination for the same reason.

Verona has excellent shopping streets just off the main piazza, Piazza Bra.

Verona is an ideal base for excursions to Lake Garda, Milan, Bergamo and Venice and there are regular day excursions to these destinations.
