NEW ZEALAND

AUCKLAND

LindaLinda Naughton is a New Zealander,   now living in Kilkee, Co. Clare.   Part of her one year's FETAC Business Studies Course in Kilrush involved a three week's work experience internship with Lillis Travel.   While with Lillis Travel, Linda prepared the following account of her fascinating country:

"In Auckland City there is the Sky Tower which is 328m (1076 ft) high. From the observation deck, you can do a SkyJump which is a cross between a bungy jump and a base jump. A jumper can reach speeds of up to 85 km/h (53 mph). There are Hotels, a Casino and many different restaurants, bars, cinema and a theatre within SkyCity.

The
Auckland Domain is located in the city and is 200 acres of park with the Wintergardens which has two large glasshouses full of plants and fishponds and the Domain is home to the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

While in Auckland City you can take a ferry ride to the outer Islands in the Hauraki Gulf. You can stay on some of these Islands. There is Waiheke Island, Great Barrier Island, and Kawau Island to name a few. You can also take a ferry ride to Devonport on the North Shore which takes 20mins.

The other way of getting to the North Shore is over the
Auckland Harbour Bridge. You can also do the Bridge Climb which is a walk underneath and over the top of the bridge to a height of 200feet above the water.

While on the North Shore a visit to
North Head in Devonport which is a headland covered in tunnels and underground bunkers can be explored (you may need a torch).

Further on (30min drive from Auckland) you can visit Snowplanet which is an indoor skiing hall in Silverdale.

To the west of the city you can visit
MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology) and from there take a 10 min tram ride to Auckland Zoo. Also to the West are the Waitakere Ranges.

Situated on
Tamaki Drive on Auckland’s waterfront you will find Kelly Tarlton’s which is an underground aquarium where you will find sharks, stingrays, penguins to name a few.

South of Auckland City (30 mins drive) down the Southern Motorway there are the Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa which is home to over 10,000 plants from around the world and is spread over 160 acres. Also in the area is Rainbows End in Manukau which is a theme park with rides and entertainment.

In
New Zealand you can go from Auckland up to Northland which has Ninety Mile Beach and the Bay of Islands.

South of Auckland (2.5 hour drive) you have
Rotorua which has geysers and boiling mudpools. There are also the Waitomo Caves which have glow worms and you can go black-water rafting. Another place to visit is Taupo. Here you will find the Huka Falls where you can go jet-boating.

On the East Coast of the North Island is the Hawkes Bay which has various wineries.

In the centre of the North Island is
Mt Ruapehu which you can ski on in the winter.

In
Wellington there is the Te Papa Museum.

CHRISTCHURCH

You can cross the Cook Strait by ferry to the South Island where you will find the Marlborough Sounds, Christchurch, Queenstown, Milford Sound, and Dunedin.

There are
many places to ski in the South Island and you can go heli-skiing as well as many adventure activities such as Bungy jumping, canyon swinging, white-water rafting and jetboating on the river.

Transport around N.Z. can be by flight, bus or car. There is a train that goes from Auckland to Wellington and you can go by ferry between the two Islands.

N.Z. is very multi-cultural so there is a lot of choice in
restaurants "
