S AN
FRANCISCO
Maureen Finucane visited
California recently
and travelled with Aer Lingus and
Sunway Holidays to San
Francisco via
New
York.
This is Maureen's account of her visit:
There is nothing like leaving Dublin airport on a cold
wet morning and arriving 10 and ¾ hours later in sunny
San Francisco. Luckily I was given the chance to do just
that, thanks to Sunway and Aer Lingus. The flight was
smooth, company good, service great and as a result time
passed quickly.
It’s a short transfer to “The Handlery Union Square”, a
3* central hotel, or “The Westin St Francis” a 5*
overlooking Union Square. Be sure to go to the top floor
in the elevator to see a fantastic view of this great
vibrant city! The trams are great for getting around the
hilly streets, taxis too are plentiful and reasonably
priced, though can be heart stopping when you see what
looks like the end of the road, the sudden drop makes
you wish you hadn’t eaten that bowl of ice-cream. The
city is definitely great for shopping. All the major
designers’ brand names are there.
You can’t visit San Francisco without doing the cycle
over the
Golden Gate Bridge. Pick up a bike from “Bay
City
Bike Rentals” and cycle or walk it up the hill.
When cycling over the bridge, watch out for walkers,
make use of that bell! On the other side it’s less
strenuous just free-wheel down the hill. It’s 9 miles/13 kms and that’s classed as the easy route! You arrive in
Sausalito,
a quaint little village that’s worth
exploring while you wait for the ferry back to the pier,
unless you feel energetic enough to cycle back. On the
ferry there is always someone willing to tell of the
history of
Alcatraz.
Drop off the bike and have lunch on
Pier 39.
Neptune’s is great for seafood, with a fabulous
view of the bay. On the pier there are sea lions and
pelicans to see along with souvenir shops, a carousel
and stage show – in all an interesting afternoon in an
old world setting.
The night life is varied with plenty of bars, or for the
mature couple a dinner cruise on “The Hornblower” is a
must. Great food, music and dancing and all while doing
a tour of San Francisco Bay, passing by Alcatraz, under
the Golden Gate Bridge and by
Candlestick Park, home of
the
San Francisco’s 49ERS football team. It’s nice to
see San Francisco lit up at night from the bay."
