Mairead's
four-week journey to Australia from Cork via Heathrow
with British Airways, involved an overnight stop in
Singapore. Read Mairead's account of her
stopover in Singapore, the Gateway to
Asia.
" Singapore is the perfect
stopover for the first-time visitor to Asia.
Our stop in Singapore was just
for one night in order to break the long journey from
Ireland to Australia.
We
arrived in Singapore in the evening & departed again the
following evening.
This gave us just enough time to rest after the flight
from London.
On arrival at
Changi Airport
I was really impressed by
the facilities Singapore's international airport has to
offer.
Changi has such a variety of shops and such a choice of
eating-places as to make Singapore the perfect choice
for a stopover during the long flights to Australia.
Singapore is extremely clean and so civilised.
I felt completely safe at all times.
We stayed in the
Little India sector of Singapore.
It is a very pretty area with a good variety of places
for eating.
Even though our time in Singapore was very short, the
city of Singapore is not too big. That gave
us time to get our bearings by taking the
hop-on hop-off open-top City Bus Tour.
This gave us a few
hours to browse around
Orchard Rd. where there is a wide
range of
Asian food outlets & of course You couldn’t
miss
Muddy Murphy’s Irish Bar!
Orchard Road is truly a buzzing area with vibrant shops,
restaurants and coffee shops. Not to be
missed, ladies!
The great thing about Singapore is that, even on a brief
visit, it offers such an insight into the mix of Indian,
Chinese and Malaysian cultures.
On a longer stopover I recommend that you put aside time
to visit the following:
SENTOSA ISLAND.
Just 20 minutes from the City and well worth a visit.
It has beautiful beaches, underwater worlds and the
Carlsberg Sky Tower.
SINGAPORE ZOO.
Another great attraction with the
Night Safari Tour
proving particularly popular with visitors.
Singapore is a beautiful city, a perfect touch down for
a first visit to Asia. I will particularly
remember it for its cleanliness and safety and my
taste-buds will always remember it for its fantastic
mixed
Asian Food Malls
After our all too brief stop in Singapore we went onwards to
Alice Springs via
Melbourne, Australia"
