INDIA.
What would Lisa's honeymoon destination
be? When Lisa got engaged this was something
that intrigued all of us at Lillis Travel!
Lisa has arranged honeymoons for countless couples, has
travelled extensively herself and has an encyclopaedic
knowledge of a vast array of destinations.
Lisa chose India!

Below is Lisa's account of Indian as a honeymoon
destination or as a destination with a difference.
"Holidaying on a subcontinent with over a billion
inhabitants is not for the faint hearted and India is
one of those places that you either love or hate. We
loved it!
We had decided to honeymoon in a country that neither of
us had seen before which left us with a short list. The
discovery of an excellent brochure, Imaginative
Traveller’s “Special Adventures and Honeymoons”
settled
us on their
Rajasthan Tour. We also added a few days on
the beach in Goa to chill out after the hectic tour
around the deserts of Rajasthan.
From start to finish it was a treat for all senses; from
the heady spices which permeated our clothes to such an
extent that our suitcases were still perfumed when we
arrived back in Ireland to the amazing sight of working
elephants pulling wood down the busy, smelly, dusty
street in
Jaipur.
As ours was a honeymoon tour we had a private car and
driver for most of the trip. Driving in India is
perilous; they overload trucks and roads and don’t
bother with signs, road marking or rules. Our car didn’t
have any wing mirrors! However the horn in every vehicle
worked and worked and the sound of hundreds of cars vans
and buses beeping was a constant soundtrack.
Imaginative Traveller uses only local guides who are
amazingly knowledgeable. We were met at the airport in
New Delhi by our first guide who brought us to our
driver and sent us on our way. After a minor detour to
the wrong hotel we swept into the magnificent grounds of
the
Imperial Hotel
. This is
without doubt the finest hotel I have ever visited. Our
room was beautiful and the public rooms stunning. The
corridors house an impressive art gallery and there are
seven restaurants in the hotel.
This was just the first of many amazing accommodations
in India.
In general I would highly recommend India as a
destination for travellers who have travelled before and
know that they will not be put off by the apparent
poverty and the occasional filth. You would have to be
prepared to haggle for most things that you buy and to
deal with a lot of street hawkers and beggars. The
government advice is not to give money to beggars but to
allow people to work for you and to tip well. We felt
perfectly safe at all times although I was a little
nervous in
Old Delhi in the warren of tiny streets with
little light because of the high narrow buildings.
We felt that our tour operator was very very good.
Imaginative traveller had someone to meet us from every
plane or train and to escort us to every accommodation
but then other than organised tours and plenty of
contact details and advice we were left to explore India
as much or little as we chose. Also while the local
guides would love to have brought us to many carpet and
marble shops and stalls they didn’t put any pressure on
us when we decided against."
